A bettor profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro just before it was officially announced, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from confidential information of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month rose in the time leading up to President Donald Trump declared on the weekend that the president had been taken into custody.

One account, which registered on the site in December and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32,537.

It remains unclear. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Trading information shows that traders assessed the probability of a political change at just under 7% in the afternoon of the Friday before the event.

Yet these probabilities had jumped to eleven percent by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the first hours of the next day, indicating a sudden change in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.

"That trade has all the signs of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other platform users also earned tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Political Attention Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

Proposed legislation put forward on recently aims to prohibit public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Prediction markets have grown significantly in the United States, with traders able to bet on everything from elections to political events.

Prediction markets encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
