The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
