A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” declared the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its role in national projects. They were built at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed pending a thorough independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these strategic undertakings.
