Sir Gareth Southgate has made clear that he is not pursuing a return to football management, noting that it would be difficult to match the special mission he experienced as England’s manager.

Southgate indicated his aim to dedicate his efforts toward working with the youth and countering what he described as a widespread pessimistic outlook currently found in the country.

Exploring Different Paths Away from The Sport

Speaking on air, Southgate was questioned on talk linking him with vacant management roles in the top flight and abroad.

“I’ve had one of the most incredible jobs in football which also had a higher purpose because it was my country,” he answered. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

Commitment to Mentorship

Prior to the launch of his upcoming book, his new work on leadership, he shared that he is “very passionate” about providing role models for young people, applying experiences from his period as leader of the England team between 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

Southgate feels that his experience coaching England, during which the team shifted from being strongly criticized to greatly admired, holds broader applications.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he explained. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Raising Children and Guiding Young People

Reflecting on his role as a parent, he observed: “Every parent aims to provide a solid foundation, yet there comes a time when children stop heeding parental advice. I’ve faced this at home, just like others, and I believe this area is critically important.”

He added: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”

Common Ground Above Discord

He asserted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the public discourse often emphasizes disagreement.

“One can see why many feel disillusioned,” he commented. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

Southgate’s new release, Dear England, is set to present further insights on management and public spirit drawn from his notable career.
