The Golden State is Fully Free of Drought for the First Time in 25 Years.

For the first time in 25 years, no portion of California is facing drought conditions. This significant achievement follows grueling years marked by a lack of precipitation that worsened blaze threats and strained its huge agribusiness.

A Map Shows Zero Abnormally Dry Areas

Thursday's report from the U.S. Drought Monitor showed that California in its entirety is free from dry or drought conditions. This change was driven by a period of above-normal rainfall that topped up major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville exceeding their typical levels.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve always lived in a world where California has been grappling with drought,” remarked a weather expert.

From Intense Storms to Soggy Celebrations

Achieving this status featured intense and deadly winter storms that struck the state in 2023, resulting in extensive inundation, electrical failures, and deaths. While those storms helped ease the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Until late December, areas like the state's northeast corner were considered unusually parched. Heavy rains at the start of the new year eliminated those remaining dry spots.

A Crucial Snowpack Is Below Average

Yet, authorities caution that drought-free conditions does not mean being out of the woods. Recent measurements of the Sierra Nevada snowpack indicate it is approximately 70 percent of the typical level.

This frozen reservoir, which accounts for approximately 30% of the state's water as it runs off, is an essential component for future water availability. Hydrology managers stress that it is not yet time to draw conclusions for the coming year.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” explained a hydrology section chief. “Our hope is for the snow accumulation to improve by the start of April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

Even as the official status is entirely green, the focus now shifts to maintaining this hard-won hydrological health throughout the rest of the year.
